Donor(s): Hon. Walter H. Annenberg—.

Economic Crisis Information: While grantmaking is by invitation only, the foundation announced the creation of Alchemy, a program designed to strengthen and aid in the sustainability of Los Angeles-based nonprofits through capacity building and leadership development.

Background: Established in 1989 in PA. Founded by the late Walter H. Annenberg. Mr. Annenberg served as Ambassador to the Court of St. James from 1968 to 1974. Ambassador Annenberg enjoyed a distinguished career as a publisher, broadcaster, diplomat and philanthropist. He was President, and subsequently, Chairman of the Board, of Triangle Publications, which included TV Guide and Seventeen Magazine, as well as radio and TV stations nation-wide. Ambassador Annenberg also founded The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania in 1958 and The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California in 1971. In 1983, he established the Washington Program in Communication Policy Studies. The Annenberg Foundation was established in 1989 with $1.2 billion, one third of the assets from the sale of Triangle Publications.

Limitations: Applications not accepted. Giving primarily in southern CA; some grants to countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. No support for political activities. No grants to individuals directly.

Purpose and Activities: The foundation exists to advance the public well-being through improved communication. As the principal means of achieving this goal, the foundation encourages the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge. The foundation also develops specialized programs and materials for educators, and operates a number of direct charitable activities. Among the projects led by the foundations trustees are the Annenberg Space for Photography Explore, and the Metabolic studio. Since its inception, more than 6,700 grants totaling more than $3.6 billion have been awarded to over 1,900 nonprofit organizations.

Program Area(s): The grantmaker has identified the following area(s) of interest:

Annenberg Alchemy: To further serve the community, the foundation is committed to strengthening the nonprofit infrastructure through a series of efforts that include free executive development and subsidized grantwriting training. The Annenberg Nonprofit Leadership Seminar brings together the leaders of nonprofit organizations for two and a half days in a workshop environment, with the goal of enabling them to work more effectively with the corporate, government and nonprofit sectors as well as other nonprofit CEOs and board chairs. The "cost of admission" for the seminar is the commitment of both the Executive Director and Board Chair. of the organization to attend the full two-day seminar. Project Grantsmanship is a comprehensive hands-on workshop designed to train nonprofit leaders to plan more effective programs and produce compelling proposals for funding. Development professionals from qualified nonprofits are eligible for low-cost grant writing training. Additionally, program officers often participate on panels informally named Meet the Grantmakers with Los Angeles nonprofit leaders to better acquaint them with the foundation and its mission. The foundation is also currently developing ongoing sessions with nonprofit leaders in low-income, underserved communities in Los Angeles, to create a dialog to clarify what needs and challenges must be directly addressed.

Annenberg Media: Annenberg Media (formerly Annenberg/CPB) advances excellent teaching by funding and distributing multimedia educational resources (video, print, and web based) to improve teaching methods and subject-matter expertise. Resources are distributed to schools and non-commercial community agencies, as well as colleges and universities, for workshops, institutes and course use. Annenberg Media makes its entire video collection available through http://www.learner.org. This web site also houses interactive activities, downloadable guides, and resources coordinated with each video series.

Direct Charitable Activities: The foundation operates a number of initiatives which expand and complement the traditional program areas and contribute to systemic change. These special projects redefine the boundaries of traditional philanthropy. Among them are Explore, a multimedia project that documents nonprofit work around the world; and Metabolic studio, a multi-disciplinary study of issues related to culture, sustainability and health. The studio contains three distinct areas: 1) Farm lab- dedicated to the preservation of living things in often-hostile urban environments; 2) Chora- supports intangibles that precede creativity; and 3) Association of Marginal Institutions. There is also The Annenberg Space for Photography, which is a free cultural destination in Los Angeles dedicated to exhibiting both digital and print photography by some of the world's most renowned photographers as well as a selection of emerging photographic talent.
